parties Friday nights while the adults would dance and drink beer, we kids would watch them drink beer and dance..quite entertaining..so I grew up
to love this music of my youth. Hirs wanted music to make you move. This is what I found on Sparks..
In the wonderful "Putumayo Presents" series that features world music
from different locations and genres with quality artists.. 2 selections:
"Baila:A Latin Dance Party" ..contemporary dance mixed with traditional Salsa
"Afro-Latin Party" -Modern African artists performing traditional Salsa and Rumba..download both of these..you got a party going on..heavy on percussion and harmonies.
"Buena Vista Social Club"...guitarist Ry Cooder put this project together
in Cuba of veteran musicians of Afro-Cuban music ,and made a wonderful
traditional recording of these still very vital seniors.
"Afro Cuban All Stars" -The same musicians with some young blood added
for a very lively set.
"Afro Cuban All Stars:The Next Generation" I love this disc of contemporary
Latin musicians and composers making traditional Salsa and Rumba
sound fresh and exciting ...highly recommended.
My Favorite album for 2007 was The Spanish Harlem Orchestra
"United We Swing" Latin Jazz done with great spirit..Paul Simon
make an appearance on the last track "Late in The Evening"
For Salsa with Hip/Hop done with traditional rhythms check out Yerba Buena --"Follow Me"
Latin Jazz favorites of mine are: Tito Puente-Live at The Village Gate
with The Golden Latin Jazz All stars
Eddie Palmieri--great piano player and composer "Sueno"
Willie Colon and Ruben Blades --"Siembra" a classic.
Cal Tjader-- "Soul Sauce" ..another classic.

Hi Nightfly,
Time for some feedback. I was going to write earlier but unusually (this Summer) the sun cam out

coinciding with a National Holiday so we went to the seaside for a few days.
Anyway onto the point in hand. Thanks so much for all the digging you did and the fine recommends. It was also great to read the back story of your youth in the South Bronx - that in itself was quite evocative and set the scene nicely.
I must admit some I preferred more than others, but that's only to be expected.
First off I grabbed both of the "Putumayo Presents" albums. As you said they make a great party in themselves!
Moving on, I know the Buena Vista Social Club and will almost certainly grab something later, but you will remember I was after sounds that would blow away the grief of work as I drove home. I decided that, whilst excellent, it wouldn't raise my pulse enough
However I couldn't pass up "Afro Cuban All Stars:The Next Generation". A really good album to add to the playlist.
The Spanish Harlem Orchestra "United We Swing" is also a really brilliant album, so, of course, that had to get downloaded too.
A real hidden gem was Yerba Buena --"Follow Me". There are a couple of slightly duff tracks, but in the main it's fantastic album, with so much energy and vitality. I can see myself in a very crowded, small (not too small though) venue filled with cigarette smoke with the whiff of spilt alcohol and loads of sweaty bodies all jostling to see the band having so much fun on stage.
Regarding Tito Puente-Live at The Village Gate with The Golden Latin Jazz All stars, Eddie Palmieri, Willie Colon and Ruben Blades and Cal Tjader. They were just that little bit too 'Jazz' for me. I must admit my tastes are quite eclectic but Jazz is just one of those things I've never really been able to get into

. It was interesting listening to all of your recommends and noticing myself reacting to certain music as it got closer to Jazz. I think there must be a hairs breadth between me enjoying some of the sounds and deciding some of the rest crossed my subliminal line - interesting.
So, I've taken a playlist (randomised) and added Best of Santana Vols 1 & 2, Supernatural (to slow down to occasionally), and the other two recommends you made before, Moonflower & Lotus. I ditched the duplicates (surprisingly few) and then I added the 2 x Putumayo albums, some Yerba Buena, The Spanish Harlem Orchestra and The Afro Cuban All Stars. Finally I topped it all off with Bokr's recommend of the Brazil Do Futuro album. I shook the whole lot together and played it for 7 hours as I drove to the coast and back over the last few days. I also listened for a few more hours as I watched my kids body boarding (they're more resilient than me)
I tell you Nightfly the whole selection rocked

I think I had a smile on my face from when I started until I finished.
Once again thanks for all your hard work. The playlist will do the job of clearing away some of the post work blues, but I've got to get a party organised here, AND SOON.
