Thumbs up Roots Reggae.. - 05-29-2007, 01:22 AM

My first recommend would be one of my desert Island discs.. Bob Marley:Legend .......A perfect album of songs (best of) that tell stories
of love, hope and social revolution ..all done by one of the worlds greatest
musicians and his great band The Wailers...found everywhere

Reggae fans do not live by Bob Marley alone...

Toots and The Maytals:The Very Best of this is Roots Reggae at its best
Toots and the Maytals have been around from the beginning when Reggae
was known as Ska and he still maintains that ska bounce to his music which
I really like and has a ruff but great voice.

There is a great Box set called :Trojan Motor City Reggae ..which contains
all Motown covers done in the 60's by a great reggae label called Trojan
Records done by various artists on the label. All done by authentic reggae
musicians of the time looking west at the Motown scene. It has 50 songs
all Motown classics..It's a fun listen..if you like Motown or Reggae..
this is at allofmp3

I forgot.. There is plenty of "rare" live and studio recordings by Bob Marley
and the Wailers On mp3stor...I had a party there ..lol..

Jonny Greenwood Is The Controller :Various Reggae This is a wonderful
collection collected by Jonny Greenwood guitarist with Radiohead who's
the selecta(reggae term) for this album and puts together a great mix from
The Trojan Records catalog..not a easy task..but all kinds of reggae are represented on this one..highly recommend.

Culture:Harder Than The Rest ..a group who should have been a lot more famous but well known to reggae fans. This is roots at its best..also look for their album ..7 Clash 7.. which is a reggae classic...on Emusic

Take care,
Nightfly

Reggae for a layman like me is only Bob Marley and Jamaica with people with long hair. I tried listening to other artists but just didnt like that much. But the piece of information you gave me was very intresting. Thanks!!

Cool Roots Reggae - Lucky Dube - 06-02-2007, 12:38 PM

Speaking of Roots Reggae i like Lucky Dube the most. He is a Rastaman from South Africa. I just love the chorus (!!Pure Harmony!!), the Keyboards (blubber), the Guitar (chuck-a, chuck-a), the Drums and Percussion (ga-gaga-gaga) tha Basssssss (wummer wummer) and not to forget the Horns (wooot)....

Jah man

To sum it up....Roots Reggae at it's very best...

1 Album on SPARKS
9 Albums on MP3STOR

Cheers,
bugihugi

I have not explored much in the way of reggae music, but I think that I might, so it is great to have ready made suggestions as to what to check out.

Thanks bugihugi..Yes Lucky Dube has a great smooth voice and is a great writer that I think is way overlooked..I think for the first timer..
"Serious Reggae".. is his greatest hits record and "Lucky Dube Live".. brings out all those band charecteristics you mentioned above..
Thanks for sharing Lucky Dube with us.. He certainly is Roots at its best..

Thumbs up Easy Star All-Stars - 06-05-2007, 07:40 PM

The Easy Star All-Stars have created 2 albums.. really 2 producers from NY whom
work with Reggae and R&B artists and put them together for 2 very interesting
and entertaining albums.

The first is "Dub Side of The Moon" of course you can assume by the tittle it is what you think..The whole Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd done with various Reggae artists and musicians to create a real fusion of traditional Reggae and contemporary Rock..This could have been a real disaster but this album stands on its own merit .. and for those of you that are tired of Dark Side over the many years.. this different approach breathes some fresh life into the music ... and then you remember why Dark Side of the Moon is a classic.

The second is "RadioDread" which is Radioheads OK Computer done completely in traditional reggae style with guest singers and musicians..
another contemporary masterpiece given full attention to detail and also
creating a perfect fusion of Reggae and Rock...Just listen to Karma Police
and it will make you smile..If you dig Radiohead or Reggae you will enjoy this one..

can't talk about roots reggae without mentioning Burning Spear. Too many classics to pick one but try Hail H.I.M. - Columbus :

I love stuff from Bob Marley's sons.
I like Gentleman (though he's a bit over-biblical).
I like Sean Paul (though he's a bit graphic).

I find that listening to shoutcast streams is the easiest way to figure out who I like from any given genre.
