Spanish Guitar -
08-31-2007, 10:38 PM
I figure, since I am at the moment in Barcelona on vacation, and have just right now returned from a concert of Manuel Gonzalez in the Basilica del Pi, a very old beautiful gothic church, I have a right to start this thread. It was absolutely amazing. Listening to the most crowd-pleasing favorites of the spanish guitar. Pieces by Albeniz, Tarrega, etc. I was in absolute awe the whole time, both when my eyes were closed and when I was intently following his superior technique. I was absolutely breathtaking how the sound of one instrument completely permeated every inch of the church. Twice during the performance, the bells rang (on half hour, and then again on the hour). Even that made it more and more amazing.
I absolutely love spanish guitar. Have several albums of it already. Resisited buying the CD being sold after the concert. 30 euros for a double CD. Holy moly. Inspired by the concert I will probably download some more spanish guitar when I'm back home in New York. .... I could download it here in Barcelona hotel, couldn't I? I love my Mac Book. It's so tiny and light, it would have been almost a sin not to take it with me on the road. So glad I did. Downloading music while on vacation... now, that's something. I think I'll resist!! I've not used my iPod yet on this trip - taking in the sights and sounds of the city.

Dreamy -
08-31-2007, 11:16 PM
Sounds Beautiful...I have found as well that my favorite place to
here Classical or acoustic music is in an old Church..
Where else to here those composers be played ?.. Sounds like
a dream except you are very much awake and in the moment.
Thanks for sharing that...to me me that sound truly "dreamy"
We can all share our Spanish classical favorites ..I will leave
out Segovia because we all know he was "The Man".
Keep enjoying and having fun,
Nightfly

I highly recommend an album by the young Hong Kong artist, Xue Fei Yang. Available on Sparks and titled "Romance Da Amor". Ravishing classical guitar.
Nothing better than listening to this, with the feet up, and sipping on a glass of water that has been filtered through a grape vine
Inside every older person is a younger person wondering what the hell happened

One of my favorites that's offered on Sparks is:
John Williams - Iberia
Williams is one of my favorite guitarists he took master classes
with Segovia, and you can hear it in his vast Spanish catalog
and playing technique.
Also
Julian Bream - Popular Classics For Spanish Guitar
this is a nice collection ..even though the date date says 1993 these are earlier recordings of Bream that I prefer, because of the tone of his guitar
is fuller on these recordings as opposed to his newer recordings that
to me are very dry sounding.
Also
Paco de Lucia - Plays Maunuel De Falla
One of my favorite guitarists, also an amazing fussion jazz player...
This is a perfect 30 min. program I play when I have company,
and people of all ages always say.. Who is this ?

Hi Vik,
The Grand Tour sounds brilliant
It's funny I was grasping around for Classical Guitar a few weeks back. I further endorse John Williams - Iberia as being brilliant. Also maybe have a listen to John Williams - The Ultimate Guitar Collection.
Where next after Barcelona?

I wish it were a Grand Tour!!! Just two cities - Dublin and Barcelona. Flying back to New York tuesday I've walked so much, I can barely move :-) I'm one of those overzealous tourists who will go and see every monument, museum, park, etc. in daylight and at night and come home tired but happy and in need of another vacation for rest and relaxation to get over the trip
When I come home I will definitely reread this thread and download the recommended albums! All I have of spanish guitar is just a couple of compilation albums and definitely need more!!

Yep. We're meeting Monday Sorry again - internet was not working. Glad we finally contacted each other!
I'll take all the recommendations in account, and do all my downloading back in New York.
By the way - when I was walking around Park Guell today, there were many street musicians there. One woman was singing so incredibly, I had to buy the CD and asked her to sign it. I almost never get the urge to buy the music from a street performer. Soft, jazzy voice. Her "Summertime" blue me away. I stood there and listened for awhile. Inga Matthies - she surely will be famous some day.
If I had a blank CD with me, I'd burn it for you.... I think that's the one thing I didn't bring on my trip - blank disks
