Soundsbox still has a long way to go - 07-16-2007, 04:39 PM

I've sent a couple of emails to Soundsbox and the effect of the replies leave a lot to be desired.

1. I asked about the bit rate viz. cd quality and was informed that many of their tracks were at (320kbps). Well I found one album out of five. OK I thought, I'll give them more time.

2. However the email also stated that as of last week "we'll have this listed with all albums".

Am I missing something? I was under the impression that what was listed besides the tracks was the bit rate for a particular song. I've checked one week later and there hasn't been any change. Maybe there's been some problems but an unfulfilled statement like the above doesn't engender much confidence for the user.

Like Archon above I am also a bit mystified, with me it is the published bitrates and file sizes on the site. I had a look at some old rock albums and I was amazed how many file sizes were whole numbers or whole numbers and a half, ie 3Mb-3.5Mb-4Mb-4.5Mb etc, etc.

Take Metallica/"Garage Inc CD1", it states all tracks are 128kbps, yet when using the bitrate tester: http://www.3ivx.com/support/calculator/index.html some tracks came out at 118kbps ?

Take Alice Cooper/"Schools Out", all nine tracks listed are either 1/3/4/or 5Mb, exactly ?

Something strange is going on?

please don't make me post your e-mails here and my replies, I have also replied on this post so many times when people were asking about bitrates... many are 320 but not all, and old albums are not in 320....I do not want to repeat myself...

You should have checked website before complaining, bitates are listed for every song now and it's like this since Friday and I have even created a post with this (search available by genres and bitrates for songs are showing)

Bigest problem is that people are lazy to look or search before complaining.

http://www.soundsbox.com/album.php?al=9171 - here is a simple album page, all look the same...does anyone have problems with finding listed bitrates for songs or it's just you...all is like this for 4 days now

bitrates are extracted from every file info, this is how it's recorded in it and we would even bother to modify this?! This info is saved by decoding program...not like we enter those numbers how we like...

bitrate checker, who says this works correctly?! have you tested all your allofmp3 downloads with it, well I doubt it...

seva

P.S. seems that some people will always find somethign to complain about...untill all download sites are gone and you'll have to use iTunes

Dear Seva,

Below is Schools Out, cut and pasted from your site Soundsbox site, so you are telling me there is EXACTLY 1x1Mb song, 2x3Mb songs, 4x4Mb songs and 2x5Mb songs, in that album? I don't think so, unless you have a copy that is especially made?

Not me perhaps someone else can work out the kbps given the file size and length of each song below?

N Song Title Time File Size Bit Rate Price
1 School's Out 3:34 3 MB 128kbps $ 0.14

2 Luney Tune 3:43 3 MB 128kbps $ 0.14

3 Gutter Cat Vs. The Jets 4:40 4 MB 128kbps $ 0.14

4 Street Fight 0:53 1 MB 160kbps $ 0.14

5 Blue Turk 5:33 5 MB 128kbps $ 0.14

6 My Stars 5:49 5 MB 128kbps $ 0.14

7 Public Animal #9 3:54 4 MB 160kbps $ 0.14

8 Alma Mater 4:26 4 MB 128kbps $ 0.14

9 Grand Finale 4:24 4 MB 128kbps $ 0.14

Whatever you may say, to me this does not add up, and I for one am not happy with you, your site or your moaning at us for complaining about it, you were never happy about publishing your bitrates in the first place. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I have mine!

We will just have to agree to disagree!

Dear Seva,

Right we are getting to the truth now.
OK, so now I get it, the file sizes you put on your website are not correct, you just round them UP/DOWN to a whole number, so in fact say a true 5.59Mb file now becomes a 5Mb file, and a 4.69Mb becomes a 4Mb on your site? So you have spent all this time tagging your mp3 files with approximate/wrong file sizes?

How does that help us to work out the true bitrate, and help us decide if we want to buy or not?

Seva, you are digging your self such a big hole!

I'm not digging any hole, that's why you have bitrates listed so you wouldn't have to spend your time doing math and calculating

File size on soundsbox is totally irrelevant as you don't pay for MB downloaded so why are you bothering me so much if it says 5MB or 5.5MB when you have correct bitrate listed?! I just don't get this...

Sadly Seva I do believe you don't get it, sorry!

Why would anyone go to the all the trouble of putting in an approximate/wrong file size, when it is just as easy to put in the right one?

Sale/Million/Fiesta don't charge by the Mb, but still put in the supposedly correct file sizes, as far as I know?

My programmers are dumb and didnt know how to figure it out...I'll fire them and e-mail some other site to give me that part of a code so site shows correct .mp3 file size. I'll do this so to make you happy no matter if you or me are right.

But somehow dont know what youre doing here at all, you dont seem to be a music lover, those people are not bothered with info's like this if the song is 5 or 5.5MB. You obviously have too much free time
