Lightbulb Amazon launches DRM-free online music store today - 09-25-2007, 08:16 PM

Amazon's long awaited DRM-free online music store launched today. The service is called Amazon MP3. There's an estimated 2 million MP3 files there, for the low price of 89 or 99 cents each. I tried it out and am happy to report that there were four CocoRosie albums available for sale there - the desktop downloader worked well on my MacBook (see image below), the shopping experience was very simple and I'm looking forward to transferring the songs over to my other computer

(I think the above intro was added later by aom3 - at least I hope it was...)

$.99 vs $1.29. An improvement at least.

We are going in the right direction ...I have always admired Amazon's
Corporate structure and have been a customer for years, and the way the owner has given to many great charitys as well as started them.

If you're going Corp. I would consider at least a view and getting something
rare at a decent price.

Edit:Many of my Afro-Pop jams are 11-18 mins a piece a song.. a album will have 4 tracks
$4 as well as most of my Jazz.. Bop era jams only 5 or 6 songs not bad at all.
There are many good buys there..for more esoteric pieces that are not common.

Thanks for the info,

Nightfly

This is really strange because I didn't write this intro - I just provided the two links

Aom3, did you press the edit button instead of the quote ditto?

Unhappy Whatever you do, don't trust your customers - 09-25-2007, 10:57 PM

In my naivety I thought these 256 kbps MP3-files had not been manipulated with. I was wrong

Amazon applies "fingerprints" rather than "locks" to music, the idea being that music exchanges can be tracked at a later date, rather than prevented from the outset.

Not that I would ever share Amazon bought music, I just don't like the idea that they don't trust their customers

And you have to provide an address within the USA to even be able to use the store

Not available in the UK?? - 09-25-2007, 11:40 PM

Am I being stupid, or is this service just restricted to the US at the moment? I just tried to use it and it insists that I input my US address after going through my credit card details (which it already know as I have been a customer for years). Am I missing something??
Cheers,
Dave C

It's been a long time

Oh Oh...This is not good...that's why I am always skeptical when
it's a US based Corp...unfourtunately I have had to much experience
as a citizen for my liking... that is why I am here as a member of
aom3.org..
Not to defend them ..there were many hoops for them to jump through, just to get to this point...Lets hope that they listen to their customer base
and become a real contender and we can always take off those fingerprints..
do we have a guide somewhere? I have found that they are customer
based, having experience buying and selling used Cd's with them.
They have a nice community of vendors and customers ..that is supported
well by their customer service.
But I do not like the US address thing..but I know that this is
a regulation set up by the RIAA, because I read it on The Pandora
website. This is why Pandora can not go global like they desire.

Lets hope they can get some autonomy from the RIAA and the shark
filled waters of lawyers.

Lightbulb A more detailed review - 09-26-2007, 06:12 AM

Here's a much more detailed review of the new Amazon MP3 store - but obviously made by someone within the USA:

iTunes started as a US only service. Just sit and wait.

Things are getting very interesting know.

Question American zip codes - 09-26-2007, 11:11 AM

Amazon's MP3 store brings more DRM-free music at lower prices than iTunes Store
Can someone (American) provide a couple of American zip codes? Since this seems to be the only hindrance to actually try this service out, if you aren't American...
