Amazon Takes On Wikipedia With Editable Music Data - 09-04-2008, 07:20 AM

Web site SoundUnwound is Amazon's new music web site designed to provide comprehensive articles and information on bands, musicians, and their discographies and lineups. Mimicing Wikipedia's user-edited model, anyone can edit a SoundUnwound article; the main difference is that all changes are approved by SoundUnwound staff before it's included on the site. Beyond that, the layout of the site is interesting and will potentially provide lots of great information, allowing you to drill down into everything you'd want to know about the artist. Right now, however, the site feels a bit low in info, and considering the existing strength of Wikipedia as a go-to source for this sort of info, SoundUnwound's got its work cut out for it. If you give it a try, let's hear how you like it in the comments.

Amazon are good people to do this. They have always had the largest
CD catalogue on the net and have always welcomed consumers
to leave reviews. Many times I had used these reviews in making
purchases. This new website is a great marketing tool for them.

Hey thanks, that's a pretty cool place (now bookmarked). It looks like it has the potential to grow into something quite useful. I especially like the "If you like X you might also like Y" links, as I'd found them quite accurate.

Here's a link to one of my favorite indie-folk bands, The Great Lake Swimmers. Check out their video for Your Rocky Spine. Good stuff.

Does anyone here use Discogs? User-contributed discographies, some supplemental artist data (sometimes a lot), and not limited to commercially released CD's, includes lots of vinyl-only releases, cassette tape, etc.

Some of the Amazon CD data can be downloaded, not sure of the licensing arrangements. Discogs data can be downloaded. I'm using a local cataloging database application, CATraxx, which is able to query both databases with ease.

I don't think anyone ever noticed this little gem, when it was originally 'planted' here by me:

I see the article refers to Discogs among others. I was pleasantly surprised at Discogs, once you painlessly register, you can start adding data for music as long as you have a physical copy in your hands. The other members may or may not vote on your contributions as being accurate, but you can still access them globally right away.

The other great thing about CATraxx (from FNProgamware, an outfit across the pond from me), you can easily update the MP3 data of any downloaded tracks to correctly reflect artist, title, album, etc. Sure, updating MP3 data is old news, (I think I even wrote a Perl script once upon a time to do it), but why not let someone else do the keypunching? That's what CATraxx easily accomplishes.

Disclaimer: I have no relation to these sites/programs other than as a user. (But need I even say that to this friendly audience?)
