Average teenager's iPod has 800 illegal music tracks - 06-17-2008, 08:40 PM

Quote:
Teenagers and students have an average of more than 800 illegally copied songs each on their digital music players, the largest academic survey of young people's music ownership has found.

The research also showed that half of 14 to 24-year-olds were happy to share all the music on their hard drive, enabling others to copy hundreds, or thousands, of songs at any one time.

Although illegal copying has become widespread, the scale of the problem uncovered by the University of Hertfordshire left the music industry surprised. On average every iPod or digital music player contained 842 illegally copied songs.

Fergal Sharkey, former lead singer of the Undertones and now chief executive of British Music Rights, said: “I was one of those people who went around the back of the bike shed with songs I had taped off the radio the night before. But this totally dwarfs that, and anything we expected.”

Thumbs up Good Old Harry - 06-17-2008, 09:58 PM

I think Harry Charleston of London hits the nail on the head: - "Sell me tracks for 20p each, and I'll spend £20 - charge me 79p and I won't bother"
Couldn't have put it better myself

Certainly did. Now I've adopted her name all I have got to do is match her looks and singing talents (could be a long wait).

Depends on how you count it. If I count the stuff I have got off mp3sparks and all the other Russian site as legal (which I do); then I have much less than 800. If you count these as illegal, it is more like 16,000 .

I assure you, I am on your side of the fence. Can't you tell by my post count?

.... but I think this article focuses on sharing of CDs and swapping entire hard drives between friends...

Thanks for that, Vik.
Good article and interesting comments from the public too.
I too would have thought the vast majority of the music on young people`s mp3 players would be technically "illegal".
Most teenagers are too savvy (and not rich enough!) to pay itunes`s prices.

I wonder how they did the research. Did they just look at a collection of iPods? Or ask the owners? If they looked at mine they would find:
4,000 tracks copied from CD's I own (but that's also illegal in UK!)
4,000 tracks from (mainly) MP3Sparks (and is that legal?)
I don't know how they would work out which were illegal. Perhaps they are saying "Unless it came from iTunes it's illegal".
Either way, it's not going to stop the teenagers (and others) copying music.
