In the US, the RIAA has a huge job on its hands policing people's computer use, but the Recording Industry Association of Japan is far more concerned with mobile phones when it comes to copyright infringement. That's because Japanese music lovers acquire new tunes on their handsets, not from their laptops. Given this reality, it was only a matter of time before criminal charges were brought against a unauthorized mobile phone download service—something that finally happened this week.

The sharp growth in digital downloads over the last few years is hardly surprising, but what's unique to Japan is the fact that a full 92 percent of all music downloads in 2007 took place via mobile handsets, not PCs.

Interesting to see that the Japanese seem to prefer to use their phone to get music.

We had a discussion here about the proposed Nokia service and it appeared that no one here was particularly interested.

I suppose its a lifestyle thing, if all your friends are doing you will tend to join in.
