Hello Nightfly,
Another reason why you haven't seen the WMP pop up to watch videos for a while is because the player or players are imbedded in the explorer browser through several add-ons or plug-ins.
Examples:
Shockwave Flash Object Player 9, which is a browser ActiveX control
WMP is also an ActiveX control
You can confirm which ones you have in addition to the mentioned above by clicking on your browser window:
TOOLS
INTERNET OPTIONS
PROGRAMS (tab)
MANAGE ADD-ONS... (Button)
You can click on anyone individually and Enable/Disable
e.g. by disabling the Shockwave Flash Object ActiveX control you won't be able to see videos on YOUtube.
I seen still the WMP pop up when listening to radio stations online.
As far as far as audio goes, you can play WMA files pretty much with any player, but like GM, I don't know about WMA-DRM files.
GM also mentioned that when you install other players they attempt to "hijack all the file types for itself". You set WMP as a default player when playing specific files by:
TOOLS
Options...
File Types (tab)
Then click on the individual formats that you want.
I hope you find the info useful..
