I must admit they were all pretty good when the only alternative was the Light Program or Luxembourg (I used to go to sleep listening to them - do you remember The Mamas and the Papas, Dedicated To The One I Love that they would play every night).

0199 - Pandora's Rock Box

On that note I'm gone - got to get myself and my back into action.

Catch you later guys.

Thanks Nightfly.

Just finishing my coffee before I head off into what looks like a better day than yesterday.

My back is still bad but it will be better when I start to move about a bit.

Gosh, don't people love to hate WMP?

For me, WMP10 works well as a simple media player with library, using the 'Stick' skin so that it takes up very little space. Like most recent Micro$oft products, the WMP11 interface is hideous. But I may try WMP12 for its streaming capabilities.

I have no DRM music, and I never let WMP connect to the internet, and I have no mp3 player to synch to, and I don't use it for ripping or burning, so for me it is problem-free; it just works for general listening. For more complex tasks, I use other players.

Hello GM,

I really don’t hate WMP and it is the player I use the most. I have WMP 9 and haven’t updated it in a LONG time. Like you I like WMP for general viewing, listening and works seamlessly with BlueTooth.

Although, I haven’t used WMP to “sync” with my Creative ZEN Micro mp3player, and have not tried to burn CDs with it.

How are you doing?

Because I haven't seen WMP pop up for media played in a long time.

Thanks,
Hello Nightfly,

Another reason why you haven't seen the WMP pop up to watch videos for a while is because the player or players are imbedded in the explorer browser through several add-ons or plug-ins.

Examples:
Shockwave Flash Object Player 9, which is a browser ActiveX control
WMP is also an ActiveX control

You can confirm which ones you have in addition to the mentioned above by clicking on your browser window:

TOOLS

INTERNET OPTIONS

PROGRAMS (tab)

MANAGE ADD-ONS... (Button)

You can click on anyone individually and Enable/Disable

e.g. by disabling the Shockwave Flash Object ActiveX control you won't be able to see videos on YOUtube.

I seen still the WMP pop up when listening to radio stations online.

As far as far as audio goes, you can play WMA files pretty much with any player, but like GM, I don't know about WMA-DRM files.

GM also mentioned that when you install other players they attempt to "hijack all the file types for itself". You set WMP as a default player when playing specific files by:

TOOLS

Options...

File Types (tab)

Then click on the individual formats that you want.

I hope you find the info useful...

I have used it to rip CDs and again it works well, but now I tend to use Exact Audio Copy.
I have not used WMP to download anything as I try to get my album art when I download the music, and like you I have no DRM files.

I do use Media Monkey but only because WMP has no codec for Flac files.

All in all I probably use WMP more than any of the others.
Hello Ashley,

Like you I have a Creative ZEN (micro) mp3 player, but so far, I have never used it with WMP. I try to access it like any other folder from My Computer. Sometimes, it doesn’t appear there, so I go on Device Manager and uninstall and reinstall the Creative ZEN “device” and proceed as planned.

Like GM, I am a little bit paranoid of letting WMP connect to the Internet, and every time it prompts me to update, I click NO.

Since you have used it, maybe, I should give it a try. Have you ever experienced any problems while trying to “sync” your Creative ZEN and WMP?

By the way, I know that WMP original does not play FLAC files, but somehow mine apparently does because “FLAC files” is listed on my WMP File Types. Maybe is a modification that I downloaded.

Nevertheless, I have downloaded OGG Codec Mod that allows me to play these files on WMP, and works really well (except that WMP is unable to estimate the time to play an entire play list until after starting to play each individual file).

Best Regards…

GHERDEZ

Hi GHERDEZ, doing fine, thanks
I thought from your earlier post you were pretty much anti-WMP. Maybe we could get Microsoft to sponsor the forum

For me, BlueTooth has always been a technology without a purpose. What do you actually use it for?

Hello Gherdez,

You were right on the money. It only opens for some radio streams but nothing else.I have all my media files assigned to winamp that I use
out of habbit for many years and mostly reliable.
When I first got into ripping my erly mp3 collection I used WMP
and they turned them into wma files...bummer.
I had to change them back to mp3 from the disc's I created because ,
I found many devices didn't play wma files..You live and learn...

I am more enlightened over the years, and certainly more since I joined
this site and learned so much.

Thanks for your great response,

Nightfly
