nuTsie and iTunes Libraries -
09-15-2007, 08:36 PM
Hi. This is my first post on this forum, although I have been reading several posts for a while now. I am a refugee from Sound Boom where my posts seemed to be very lonely. I am glad to see that this is an active forum. I currently use a number of music services mentioned in this forum and will begin to post comments on those as seems fit.
But on to my reason for this thread. First, I use iTunes on my Mac as my music player and this thread applies to other iTunes users who may have non-iTunes purchased songs in their library. There is currently a new service out there called nuTsie (an anagram of iTunes) which allows one to upload their iTunes library file (an .xml file) to the nuTsie service (only the file, not the actual music). Then, they stream your playlist (in shuffle order) to your computer or anyone's computer or a mobile device. They stream the songs from their library of mp3s and they pay the royalties. So far, so good. If you read up on nuTsie, it seems everybody loves it and thinks it's great.
BUT, I have a major concern about this service that I'd like to get others' opinions on. nuTsie says that you can't upload just a playlist or a selection of songs, but only the ENTIRE .xml file. This means that you are sending them a list of everything in your entire library, including songs you may have acquired through p2p, Russian sites, ripped CDs, and other sources. Maybe I'm being paranoid, but that just can't be a good thing to let some service who already has a relationship with the RIAA/SoundExchange folks have access to the contents of your entire library.
I'd like to know what you all think of this. My first instinct is don't use this service, but if it sounds like it would be fun to share your library with others, then use a utility from, say, Doug's Scripts that allow you to create separate library files and only upload the file you feel comfortable with. Even so, I'm still not sure I'd want to give out this information. You have no idea what they could do, marketing-wise, with a list of all your favorite music. Just wanted to share my concerns.

Hi RareWaveMusic.
I have never used iTunes (when I started using AllOfMP3 (January 2004), I wasn't allowed to because I'm not American - and the DRM-issue will always keep me away from such a music store). But I can certainly understand your hesitation to use a MAFIAA infiltrated service - I wouldn't trust these guys my first born child.
Compared to Songboom we might be active but then you should see this forum each time something bad related to AllOfMP3/MP3Sparks happen: Boom a thousand new forum members in no-time. So we can surely live with a little inactivity

nuTsie, RIAA, etc. -
09-20-2007, 04:41 AM
Hello RareWaveMusic and Solaris,
My name is Dave Dederer. I am part of the nuTsie team, and I'm also a performer, songwriter, record label owner, music publishing company owner, etc., best-known in that world as a member of the band The Presidents of the United States of America.
It IS possible to upload limited playlists to nuTsie. Select the playlist you want from your iTunes library, click File, click "Export Playlist," then upload that playlist. We don't have to get all of your metadata. You could upload one playlist or a few playlists that you wanted to share and leave the rest of your data alone.
Also, you can check out all sorts of playlists and build a set of playlists that you can readily access and share with other folks without ever uploading your own iTunes metadata. Please do check it out.
From my perspective, possibly the coolest thing about nuTsie is that all of the songs people have illegally loaded into their iTunes library will be monetized for the first and maybe only time if the metadata re those songs is uploaded to our site and then we stream those songs and pay royalties. Hooray!
Just because we're trying to work within a legal framework and paying royalties to copyright holders, performers and songwriters through SoundExchange, ASCAP, BMI and SESAC doesn't mean we're in bed with them. Au contraire, mon frere. Just like just because The Presidents were on Columbia Records doesn't mean we support the funny-money accounting screw job they give to every artist, from nobody to superstar. You gots to cook with the tools and ingredients at hand.
Best,
Dave

Thanks for the Information -
09-20-2007, 08:12 AM
See, this is exactly what forums are for. Intelligent exchange of info to help get a better perspective on a particular subject. I had read through all the nuTsie FAQs and here is where I started getting concerned...
Can I Upload Just One Playlist?
No. iTunes allows users to export one playlist rather than an entire Library.xml file. nuTsie does not currently support uploading only one playlist. For nuTsie to properly receive and process your music selection, you must upload your entire Library.xml file using the Export Library feature of iTunes.
If one CAN upload just one playlist, then that FAQ is misleading. There could be a number of reasons to not want to upload your entire library file (other than controversial sources of music). As an example, I use Vonage and store voice mails in iTunes. I also create jingles for my Live365 station and I store those in iTunes. (Since most readers probably know about the Internet Radio battles, you'll understand my sensitivity and paranoia to "big brother" tactics to drive our stations off the air, but that's a whole other post!) Anyway, I am comforted by the clarified information and appreciate the idea that artists could now get paid whereas they may not have otherwise. I will reconsider my thinking on nuTsie based on what I've learned. Thank you.

We'll fix the FAQ -

Thanks for the heads-up. A little bit embarrassing that our FAQ is incorrect. To be fixed ASAP.
Best,
Dave

Good job Dave. I like the concept of nuTsie.
I can use this service from The Netherlands. Pandora has cut everyone outside the US off. Is nuTsie working with a different license or is Big Music keeping an eye shut here?

nuTsie - uploading a playlist -
09-28-2007, 01:33 AM
I've been on nuTsie for the past week and think it's a great site for music; definitely worth checking out. I am not interested in uploading my whole iTunes library but decided to try and upload one playlist. I was able to do this successfully which is good because now I can pick and choose what playlists I want to share. Great concept and great way to hear all kinds of music - new and old.
