Thumbs down Open-source DRM? - 10-27-2008, 08:50 PM

From CNET News

Quote:
Marlin, a new open-source DRM scheme, is alleged to be different, as noted in PC Pro:

The co-chairman of the Marlin Developer Community claims the open-source system is far less oppressive than those from rivals such as Apple and Microsoft, allowing users to share content between any Marlin-enabled device in the home rather than on specific machines. "It works in a way that doesn't hold consumers hostage," Talal Shamoon told PC Pro. "It allows you to protect and share content in the home, in a way that people own the content, not the devices."

Talking Can open-source DRM be put to good use? - 10-28-2008, 10:32 AM

Hello GM,

Open-Source DRM…

"It allows you to protect and share content in the home, in a way that people own the content, not the devices." Now the average Joe can have control his own creations…

Cool… Now I can put it on my next album release:

“Greatest Shower Hits”

But, I just can’t figure out who would want to buy it, and I have yet to overcome some technical difficulties, and people have told me that I could only be used to blackmail me.
But I refuse to let all this problems discourage me though… Ok not really…

Wait… I think I could propose the use open-source DRM for people who want to prevent reputation-damaging videos from ever leaking out from the selected few authorized viewers… Open-source DRM as a damage-control tool…

And, even this idea, doesn’t sound very convincing.

I am sure that there are other possibilities. I just can’t think of ANY right now… Can anyone think of any good uses for open-source DRM for the “home” user?
