Post Radio Head Creates New Buying Option - 10-08-2007, 06:51 PM

The band Radiohead has left their major label and have gone Independent.
They have put their new album on their website, and the cost is based
upon the customer option, of what they are willing to pay.To keep customers
honest there is a minimum of 45 cents. See how this new customer based
buying option might affect the Music Industry.

Hi Nightfly (like the new Avatar, very funky),
that is an interesting article and I would love to know what the average buy ends up at (I would guess somewhere between $1 - $3). It makes no mention in the article of DRM, do you know if Radiohead have attached any to the download?
Cheers,
Dave C

Hey Dave,

I have read else where ..No DRM...and they will have it soon on
Independent oriented sites..They have had it with the music industry
as it is, and feel that their fans will take care of them, and they will
actually make more money this way..Getting paid direct without giving
everybody not associated with the making of the music and their hard work ,a piece of their change...Excellent...as a fan I wish them well
and hope they succeed. So far they are not coming out with the results
of this experiment and how much they are getting paid on average. But it
will be interesting to see.I will follow this up and let you know if I find out
any more Info.

Thanks,

Nightfly

Wow Nightfly, as Dave says that sure is one hell of an Avatar

Well I don't mind being the first in a straw poll. I have just agreed to pay £1.95 for the album £1.50 + £0.45 administration fee, so about $3.95. The 'Rolling Stone' site says the album is DRM free but I can't find any hints about what bit-rate it will be offered at

I'm probably not the Worlds biggest Radiohead fan (although I don't mind them), I guess I just want to support the initiative and hope more bands follow.

I'll let you know how it is after I've downloaded it on or after this Wednesday - assuming the download site doesn't crash with everyone downloading at once

Hello Hirs,

I changed it since Dave saw it last...lol..he might be surprised as well.

The site did crash on the first few days. But you are right and fair with your
price.I would imagine that it would at least be 256bps. why bother, else wise.
They are a Tech. oriented band.

Edit: Changed it back again because my man Dave like it.
(and the other one made me dizzy)

But please keep us posted,

Nightfly

Hi Nightfly,
I saw them both and think you made the right choice. I did think you were going to keep changing it every time someone mentioned it (who knows, you still might),
Cheers,
Dave C

Now I'm really wondering if I offered too much money for the album . This is the mail I've just received regarding being able to download the Radiohead album tomorrow:

THANK YOU FOR ORDERING IN RAINBOWS. THIS IS AN UPDATE.

YOUR UNIQUE ACTIVATION CODE(S) WILL BE SENT OUT TOMORROW MORNING (UK TIME). THIS WILL TAKE YOU STRAIGHT TO THE DOWNLOAD AREA.

HERE IS SOME INFORMATION ABOUT THE DOWNLOAD:

THE ALBUM WILL COME AS A 48.4MB ZIP FILE CONTAINING 10 X 160KBPS DRM FREE MP3s.

160kbps - I don't get out of bed for less than 192 and try to aim for 256 Variable. It had better be a bloomin' good album

Thanks Hirs,

I have adjusted my Price for their new release. At Emusic new records by Joni Mitchell and John Fogerty now independent artists and big names . It is 22 cents a download for them for me, at 192bps. Now I will adjust my payment to $2.20 for the 10 tracks for the new Radiohead which I never heard before.
They don't deserve any more than the top 2 above artists for what they are offering.

Thanks for the scoop...

Nightfly
