Young people prefer streaming music - 06-19-2012, 07:08 PM

From CNN|
Quote:
For Camille Kim, music is life. On a typical day, the Emory University student spends hours on her laptop, scouring the Internet for the latest music. She uses a site that aggregates music recommendations from blogs to discover new artists and songs, streams them online and then shares her finds with her friends through a Facebook group. But she rarely buys songs or albums.

Young listeners like Kim represent a looming sea change for the music industry, which has been in upheaval since the Napster era of the late 1990s. Five years ago, music consumers had to choose between buying a CD or downloading the album. Nowadays, thanks to the rise of music-streaming services like Pandora and Spotify, that choice is becoming whether to download music or just stream it online.

I believe it is only us old timers that have that collectors mentality that want to own the musically physically.I listen to Internet radio like Pandora to hear new or different artists in a genre that I might not have heard of, or given a good listen to,and discover I like them.

Young people have a different mindset. They are not album oriented like us older folks are. They cherry pick songs from and an album and leave the rest.I need to have the whole album or I feel like I'm missing something...

Hi My Friend,

Yes, it us old timers who buy CD's, well it is in my case anyway.
As I have said before, I love a boxset, and use Fathers Day (last weekend), Birthday & Xmas money to fund this hobby, while downloading the rest from our Russian friends. My view is to buy from around Europe to get the best prices, especially with say something like "Original Album Classics", where you get five albums for about £12.50 or less delivered, unbeatable at £2.50 per album.
I have also picked up some cracking secondhand stuff from Amazon Sellers, Ebay etc.
Morow.com is my favourite internet radio station, because it specialises in Prog Rock, which is my thing.
I listen to albums, my kids listen to numerous individual tracks, at least I have taught them the Russian music sites, and they are not ripped off by itunes.

Regards

Procol Harum's A Whiter Shade of Pale is the most played song in public places in the last 75 years, according to a chart compiled for BBC Radio 2. (April 2009)

Well color me awkward, but when I was a kid and all my friends were buying albums, I was buying singles, so I've always cherry-picked the best tracks. It's just easier now. I suspect that the real reason young people don't want to own their music so much these days is because of their perception of its value.

When you've had to scrimp and save to get your music, you value it, you treasure it, you want to keep it, you end up building a collection. These days, after Napster, after Kazaa, after Bittorrent, after free CDs stuck to the front of newspapers, after free streaming services and a gazillion radio channels, it must be hard for the under-thirties to believe that music is worth anything.

Ashleyj suggested recently that us old-timers pay for our music to salve our consciences. I suggest that we pay for our music because it's important to us to believe that it's still actually worth something.

Hello everyone . I find myself streaming music more and more as of lately. Its kind of funny because around the time that Spotify launched I thought the whole idea of not having a copy of an album/song I like to listen to, was kind of gimmicky. Now when I'm at home I'm usually listening to some playing on YouTube. If I'm on the go I just use Pandora Radio on my droid XD. I've yet to put any mp3's on my phone yet and I've had it for at least a couple of months now.

I still buy music from the Russian/Ukrainian stores, but not nearly as much as I use to. I guess my wallet thanks me for that .

I'm currently all out of codes. Stay tuned!

It does seem to be the way of listening to music these days - I know someone who uses Spotify heavily.

But the big drawback with that is that you need to have access to the internet all the time to be able to stream music. Personally I don't so it's not much good to me. There two times during the day when I'm normally on the computer - early morning before going to work when I listen to the radio whilst browsing, and the evenings when I tend to have the TV on in the background.

So whilst it's fine for the odd occasions I still prefer to get a physical copy that I can load onto the devices I use to listen to music on, my iPod, car etc.
