OK on 0.11 version............... -
07-07-2012, 09:04 AM
I have just tried the Alltunes 0.11 version which is on my second PC running XP, and the FULL previews are working OK.
I will try my newer Win7 PC, also with 0.11 version later.
I never update versions that are working fine, unless I have to/everybody (and their dog) says it 101% OK.
How many times do people get caught out over the years, especially with newer versions of music downloaders?
If it is working OK leave well alone is my motto.
Regards
Chris.
UPDATE
All previews working fine on main PC Win7, with Alltunes 0.11 version.
Procol Harum's A Whiter Shade of Pale is the most played song in public places in the last 75 years, according to a chart compiled for BBC Radio 2. (April 2009)

Very useful tip about the data manager. I'm having the same preview problem after upgrading, and like others, it's not fixed by downgrading, but doesn't occur on another machine where I never upgraded to begin with.
So before I run the data manager, what will this end up deleting? I assume the catalog database will just wipe out the catalog, but my guess is the real fix is deleting the user database. If I do that, will it erase all my previous downloads and my bookmarks? I have a few hundred of those, and no easy way to export them to a readable format (since they only export the IDs, not the artist/album/song titles), so I don't want to take a chance on losing that.
Thanks,
Keith

Guess the ordering is a general problem and will wait it out.
Peace and out,

Hi kswartz
As far as I know, using the Data Manager to delete the user databases will indeed wipe all your bookmarks etc., but I haven't tested that. Depending on your version of Windows, the user databases are located somewhere like C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\allTunes\allTu nes\(username); you could manually make backup copies and test the effects of deleting various files.
Deleting the catalog database seems to only get rid of the main catalog file, but ignores other catalog fragments left behind by failed updates. These files are typically located in C:\Users\All Users\allTunes\allTunes. There should be a file there called atc.db; if there are others called, for example, atc.db.[3], atc.db.[4], you should delete these as they can cause problems.

Thanks, GM. I'm going to take a few backups then, and try some selective deletions. I'm hoping I can export my bookmarks, a nd re-import them after the purging without losing anything. Downloads...well, I guess I can live without those records, since they're also available on the web site.
I'll post my results here in case anyone is interested.

Well, first tests are bad. I tried importing my bookmarks and copying my download records into my working 0.9 install, and now it's truncating those previews. When I wiped out all my files [there is no db manager for that release], it STILL truncates my previews.
UPDATE: Copied over the data manager executable and ran it on my 0.9 install. Previews are still truncated. So I'm no longer convinced that's really the correct fix.
I'll probably hit up their support folks now, as soon as I remember how to do that.

Hi kswartz
When I posted earlier this evening, I had full previews and could download without problem. Now, downloads are still working, but previews have gone again - as they've been doing on-and-off for me over the past couple of weeks. It's hard to troubleshoot when the service is intermittent like this. If you manage to fix your issue, do please let us know.

Thanks, GM -- actually, this is very helpful, because it suggests the problem is server-related and not (or not only) client-related. Probably a mixture of both, since at one point, it simultaneously worked on one machine (0.9) and didn't work on another (1.0) for me.
I actually suspected this for some time, because the mp3 is initially showing the full length, but then it truncates after it starts, suggesting that the HTTP headers are being updated after the fact. That's consistent with what they do for the "unprivileged" account holders, so it could just be a problem in the communication between their streaming and the account database that validates whether a user is entitled to full streams.
Since I do know people have gotten it working again, I can be patient, and wait to see what their support folks say.

From past experience they take down the previews when they have heavy traffic on the site or do system maintenance. It is a lot on their side, the taking down of previews.I know this from when we USED to be able to talk to them. But I no longer have anything to do with Sparks or Alltunes. To much drama for me.
Just be patient and it will be back.Unless it is a software issue that you have troubleshooted and are sure of.
