Regarding movies, could you not maybe make a little script on the server side of things that tries to initiate a movie download, say once an hour or something, and then updates a status page for the software to call up, and if the status page returns a ah barn its not working result, display a message in the software accordingly?

actually, the system is working in the similar way you described, but much more sophisticated
