True, it's not a typical Stones album and it's definitely "of its time" but I always enjoyed it - and it contains one of their best tracks, 2,000 Light Years From Home.
It's a patchy album - but quite a few Stones albums are patchy. Any views?

As a long time Stones fan (as a point of reference: I bought and still own the first dozen or so Stones LP's on vinyl. Some in mono!) I always thought SMR was a very weak release. Possibly my least favorite of the early Stones stuff.
I always justified it as the Stones answer to the Beatles Sgt. Pepper as they were released about the same time. This was a time of heavy drug use for all involved, particularly Keith and Brian Jones. This was reflected in a lot of the cuts.
This was about the time that I started to back off the Stones and not buy everything blindly that came on the market. They actually started to lose me after Between the Buttons but I continued to buy up through Beggars Banquet and much less frequently after that.
Each to their own, but I'll bet I have not listened to the complete album in at least 30 years. Maybe I'll give it a try again.
Thanks for bringing back some memories!
