Magnatune - 07-13-2007, 03:33 PM

Ref: http://www.magnatune.com

This is only an opinion. It may or may not be founded in reality

The reason for the RIAA's aggression toward alternate methods of music distribution is a result of the possibility that digital distribution has the ability to lead traditional methods of distribution to extinction. The RIAA is more concerned about maintaining their status (power) and existence than they are concerned about protecting the artists.

Artists now have the ability to record and distribute their own offerings outside the environment of traditional recording studios and depending on the RIAA to play Big Brother. The RIAA has a terrible record when it comes to providing any financial benefit to many artists. classical musicians are low in the RIAA food chain. Many of them rarely are paid for their work when their music is distributed by the RIAA.

Magnatunes is an example of an alternate distribution model. Artists are able to provide full length samples of their titles in lower bit rates and sell higher bit rate tracks. Prices for "CD quality" full length discs are a fraction of the cost of the archaic distribution model that mainly supports Big Brother. The music distributed by Magnatunes is offered with the full consent of the artists, many of them that feel they are victimized by the RIAA and traditional models.

Here's hoping for a better future for the artist and a bleak future for the RIAA. Hopefully the digital production and distribution model will be the asteroid that leads the the RIAA dinosaur extinction.

I am also hoping that many sites similar to Magnatune become available.

Thanks Wdcentral...Loved the site...there was some really nice classical and
world music from artists I never heard before but I got to listen to the whole album...really cool buying options that support the artist and let the people
choose how much they can afford to pay....a great way to reach the masses..and when you treat the masses fairly..they are sure to treat you back the same way..a good workable model that RIAA should consider if they
have any desire to survive.
Thanks for the excellent post,
Nightfly
