What music shop is good for what genre -
07-09-2008, 01:57 PM
Im compiling up list of music shops that are specifically good for certain genres. And wondered what music shops do you go for your genre needs?
For example during mp3skyline's glory days, it was good for dance music.

Amazing coincidence! I was just thinking of that same question today, and went to the forum to see if there were any discussions about that.
A list/guide like that would be very helpful. For one thing, since you need to pre-load your account on many of these sites with $$$ (and for me, money isn't growing on trees lately, if at all!), having a reference to which sites are strong in which genres would help me decide how much of a balance to keep at which sites.
All of the main sites have the most popular music, so that's not an issue. It's when I get into less mainstream genres that I run into trouble. I'd welcome any suggestions on genres like:
- A Cappella (e.g., collegiate close-harmony groups, the King's Singers, etc.)
- Chant (Gregorian, Russian, other traditional)
- Choral music (groups like the Cambridge Singers, Anonymous Four, Swingle Singers, chamber choirs, etc.)
- Traditional gospel (groups, not individuals, e.g., Soul Stirrers, Blind Boys of Alabama, Fairfield Four, etc.)
- Baroque classical (I know about Eclassical.com, BTW; lookining for others)
- Sacred music, generally
- Traditional folk
Please keep us posted on your progress. I'll contribute recommendations where I can. (I'm new at this.... )
Thanks!
Bob

For me, MediaClub has the best selection of rock and it's sub genres, e.g. hard rock, heavy metal, progressive rock, progressive metal, krautrock and on and on.

Thanks again, Nightfly! Just giving this thread a bump, as it's been a few months, and I hope more people will weigh in with their opinions.
All the best,

Bob,
How you doing?
What have you found in your site travels about genres?
I've been spending a great deal of time at Emusic getting some
great African funk and Latin. They have been increasing
their Soul intake..Otis Redding Live in England and Paris for instance ...phenomenal recording.
Mp3sale has been geeting in a great deal of mainstream new releases.
Soundsbox is consistant with various genres of new arrivals everyday.
I have been told that Mp3xclusive(used to be mp3skyline) is great
for Techno,R&B, and I have found some Soul goodies there.
