Best Way To Download From Millisong - 07-05-2008, 05:49 PM

I'm using Firefox 2 w/download status bar extension.

The basic options at Millisong are to download albums track by track, or to "archive/zip" the album. When I do it track by track it's quite laborious. The archives are easier, but download much slower.

Is there a better way? I'm in the process of downloading dozens of albums.

Hi Chamlin, I use two Firefox extensions to download from Millisong:
1) DownThemAll - which is my preferred downloader
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/201
2) Flashgot
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/220

Once you've got them set up (including download location) which is really straightforward you just go to the Millisong download page, right click and, from the prompt you will see, start downloading your selected tracks. Brilliant and simple Good luck

If you have not considered a download manager, I would strongly suggest that you give one a try.
I personally use Internet Download Manager, but it does cost 20 bucks.
Lot of folks here use Free Download Manager or the Flashget/Flashgot combo for Firefox.
I have had some problems with Flashget/Flashgot, but you may not.
Give one of them a shot!

Mark

Yes! Clearly, DownThemAll is easier. Two issues/questions:

1. Without a manager, I was able to download what seemed like unlimited numbers of tracks at a time. I clicked on each of 10-12 tracks on a Millisong album, clicked save to... for each of them and they all simultaneously downloaded. But with DTA, only 4 at a time are downloading. Why???

2. As I had already downloaded 5 albums prior to DTA, when I clicked downthemall, all of those "already downloaded albums" were checked in DTA because Millisong still has them listed "Time to live for this links: 3 days", so I had to uncheck them in DTA. Is there a way to not go through this again? Or is it that once I uncheck them, they won't come back checked the next time I download. Or can I get rid of the "Time to live for this links: 3 days" on Millisong so DTA doesn't pick up the links?

Thanks a Million-isong!

Hi Chamlin:
1) I think it's just down to download efficiency (and you can adjust how many tracks are downloaded at once in the settings - I think the max is 4). Don't worry your current setting will have 4 tracks downloading at once. Once one track has finished downloading DTA will grab another track so you always have 4 downloading at once until your selection is complete.

2) Yep, that's a small downside (but only a small downside - I think all the download managers are the same) each time you launch DTA you must de-select the tracks you don't want.
Remember Millisong will only keep your tracks 'live' for 3 days, so if you were to to re-visit in 3-4 days and buy something new then only your new selection would be available to download as all the older tracks would have vanished.

Despite 1) & 2) above at least you can set an album downloading and get something cold to drink rather than having the hassle of "right click, save as"

I agree on all counts! But man, that's a lot of unclicking. Is there a "select all/deselect all?
Thanks for the guidance.

A man who has been in the arid lands for 40 years doth need to drink from the well.

Actually, I'm replacing my old cassette collection. Thought of just converting them (did a few) but too much work.

Hi chamlin

If you're at some later point looking for an alternative download manager (or combo), the below described is what you should try out first:

If you use Firefox with the FlashGot extension (get it here: http://flashgot.net), you can use any downloader to "FlashGot All" tracks of an album and then filter away the links that don't contain a MP3 file extension.

I use Free Download Manager, which I can highly recommend for both speed and ease of use. Get Free Download Manager here: http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/download.htm

And off you go with up to 3000 KB/Sec. on certain sites

I have NEVER had ANY download troubles using that combination
