Beware bitrates! - 07-09-2008, 03:20 PM

Lavamus is a great site but they really do need to address the quality of some of their catalogue.

And it's not just old titles that they have a problem with - some of the latest new releases are also below the perceived 'High Quality' bitrate of 192 Kbps.

The new Sharleen Spiteri album was added today and 8 of the 11 tracks are below 192 Kbps.

One track even shows the shock horror rate of 128 Kbps.

Come on Lavamus love what you're doing but it's a shame that I have to check every track before downloading.

you are wrong, we already discussed about that

when tracks are encoded with lame in V2 (vbr , you have 192kbps quality but sometimes lower bitrates

for the new spiteri's album, it's perhaps the reason

you can read LAME - Hydrogenaudio Knowledgebase

OK, I'll rename Beware kbps!

It doesn't get away from the fact that there is a vast discrepancy in the quality of the tracks and that a lot of these are below the 192 kbps level advertised.

I can only quote from the Lavamus listing for this album: -

1. It Was You 192 kbps
2. All The Times I Cried 164 kbps
3. Stop I Don't Love You Anymore 165 kbps
4. Melody 151 kbps
5. I Wonder 163 kbps
6. I'm Going To Haunt You 139 kbps
7. Don't Keep Me Waiting 195 kbps
8. You Let Me Down 128 kbps
9. Where Did It Go Wrong 196 kbps
10. Day Tripping 170 kbps
11. Francoise 155 kbps

I'm just advising 'buyer beware'!

But thanks anyway for the link to the science lesson . My brain hurts!

I downloaded Kool & The Gang singles collection (don't laugh) & all the tracks were 128kbps. To be fair I informed Lavamus of this who said that it was because of a problem with their music provider & refunded the tracks. Other excuses have been because the album is an old release version & will be updated. My point is, the new album by Sharleen Spiteri is brand spanking new out, so why is the majority of it's bitrates below the "High Quality 192 Kbps" that Lavamus offers on it's site????

I went for a weekend away with my sister a couple of years ago in Atlantic City. Sister time, so to speak. We hadn't planned anything. Ended up buying tickets to see Kool and the Gang once we arrived. I had no idea what I was in for. Turned out not only did I know all the songs, but I had an amazing time!!!!!

you haven't understood, you can encode tracks at 192kbps if you want but quality is strictly the same than when you encode in V2

same thing with 320kbps, most people think it's better than V0 but in fact it's NOT !

so the tracks on lavamus are really in quality 192kbps

So, you are saying that even though every track shows a different kbps, they are all really 192kbps?

No, you're right, I don't understand and I don't think that I ever will.
