Clapton in his own words.... -
10-29-2007, 05:22 AM
Just finished reading Eric Clapton's Autobiography. This is the very last paragraph of a very personal account of his fascinating life. Don't worry - no spoilers here :-
"The music scene as I look at it today is little different from when I was growing up. The percentages are roughly the same - 95 percent rubbish, 5 percent pure. However, the systems of marketing and distribution are in the middle of a huge shift, and by the end of this decade I think it's unlikely that any of the existing record companies will still be in the business. With the greatest respect to all involved, that would be no great loss. Music will always find its way to us, with or without business, politics, religion, or any other bullshit attached. Music survives everything, and like God, is always present. It needs no help, and suffers no hinderance. It has always found me, and with God's blessing and permission, it always will.
Amen to that!

I hate this statement. All music is good, it just depends on who is listening to it. My 3 year old son hates it when I put the latest Tunng album on, but he will jump about to The Grand Old Duke Of York (I just Breath in, Breath out as it has already been on 5 times in the last hour ). Mika makes the 5% for me, not sure Nightfly would agree . For me, virtually all 'World' music, 'classical' music and 'Country & Western' music fall into the 95% category, but I am probably in the minority for thinking this. I like the point which Eric is making, I just do not think he starts the argument off well ,
Cheers,

His autobiography is an intensely personal statement. Including the percentages he states, I would guess. His 5% are different from your 5% and are different from my 5% -- but they are 5% nonetheless. We can all agree that some music, such as that by Katie Price, is in noone's 5%

Dave,
I think old man Clapton may and I say may, because I didn't read the book,
might be referring to his own genre of music which is Rock/Pop..
Because I believe Eric is to worldly to make a such a broad statement
to include all genres of music..I know for a fact that Clapton goes to the
Opera, listens to world and has played with world artists and has made
some Country based albums like "Slowhand",
Because most of us here feel that most music is great and
a lesser amount not so great. We have to believe that Clapton loves
music at least as much as we do.
I wonder If Mika falls in Clapton's 5% .........
Curious minds want to know......

I did read it And whereas there are a lot of things the man's done in his life that are of questionable judgement (and legality!) - taste in music is not one of them.
My guess re: Mika, is that he would find him curious
