On digital piracy - 06-19-2008, 02:22 PM

My opinion on digital piracy is balance in the sense that it has pros and cons. Pros in the sense that pirated materials are very much common and popular to the public and thus it helps to promote not so popular material. Channels of communication are very limited and when you tap the right channel for the majority of those who really purchase digital materials then you will profit from it. There are really sectoral groups who patronize original copies and they are those with buying capacity. For me the only cons is you feel sorry for those material being pirated because they are popular. But let us think this way, it wouldnt be consider as popular if its not being known and being pirated. Who wanted a not so "hot" copy anyway

If the "legitimate" sites reduced their price to 20p (40 cents) for a 320kbps track, they would make colossal amounts of money and the "pirate" sites would go out of business.

But they should have done so YEARS ago They have lost a whole generation of music buyers

None of my pupils would even consider buying music. They have never been accustomed to do so, like we were in my whole generation (and the one that came before).

Note: Have you guys ever thought about the fact, that many of us here (except maybe Habylab and Squash54 ) are near 30 or older?

You're right, but I bet a large proportion of "illegal" downloaders wish they could afford to be "legitimate".

NONE of my students (where of maybe 80-90 % download music/movies) care one single bit - believe me...

They were 7-8 years old, when Napster was HUGE and have been brought up by KaZaA and LimeWire

If there were an American equivalent of Sparks, that

a) gave ninety-second song samples or entire-song samples, instead of &%$@#!! thirty-second samples,

b) gave me a choice of format (WAV, WMA, MP3, OGG, more),

c) gave me a choice of bitrates and charged by the Mbyte, and

d) didn't attach DRM to the song, and let me download the song to my hard drive with no restrictions, and let me burn the song onto CD with no restrictions --

-- then I would be willing to spend about fifty cents a song, triple what I pay here, knowing that the artist would get some royalty from me.

But since the RIAA would never allow that, those who know about Sparks come here, and everyone else downloads illegally.
