DRM Removal Legal? - 07-09-2007, 05:52 AM

i have noticed that many people on this forum (solaris in particular) really hate DRM protection

so, my question is... is removing DRM Protection legal?

I know i can do it, and everyone else can with the right software

but, is it legal?

thanks

Stripping DRM off iTunes Store files, better known by the name FairPlay, is completely legal.

Although there are tools for removing protection from WMA files, stripping DRM off the files in not legal. At least not in the States.

If you live in the USA, circumventing any encryption breaks the law (the law called "the DMCA"). To remove DRM, you have to circumvent encryption. There are a few exemptions to the law (for libraries, etc), but being a home user isn't one of them.

The trick to getting by in America is to understand just how completely corrupt and inefficient the government is. You're more likely to get hit by lightning than caught violating any of their stupid laws.

But most of all, just don't stick it in their face and you can get by. Don't march or protest anything. Just send some money to promote causes and let the professionals try to change things.

This is why I support music download sites with contributions
