Thumbs up Marillion & DRM - 08-02-2007, 04:21 PM

Hi Friends

Some of you know that I'm a huge fan of Marillion and that I really hate DRM.

Recently Marillion has begun to sell, through their own music shop, Racket Records, part of their music catalogue, as downloadable mp3 files. This is what you can find at their website, about DRM :

Quote:
Digital Rights Management is a way for bands, record labels, or online retailers to protect their downloaded music from copying or other attempts to re-distribute the files illegally. DRM can often also cause problems with playing the music on different computers or portable devices.

Racket Records Downloads do NOT use DRM of any kind.
We thought you'd like that. HOWEVER! We do have a very important request: just because our downloads are not 'protected' does not mean that they should be shared, uploaded to music sharing sites, or otherwise given away. Even a download still costs us money to make - the recording and mixing costs, creating artwork, the servers to host the files, and the website so you can access them.
So please, we thank you for buying and enjoying our music, but please do not upload it or give it away. If you think someone would enjoy Marillion, tell them about Crash Course - they can sign up to get one for free, direct from us. It really makes a difference!
These boys are trying to change the way music industry works since several years. Maybe the prices are still expensive, but at least they are trying to be honest with fans and doesn't infect the files with DRM.

As they always say:

Hello Kalvin,
This is a excellent model for all artists to break free
from the reins of the big record labels and still make a living
and show respect and love for their fans..Recently Prince did not sign
with Sony UK and he gave thousands of his new CD away for free
as a Magazine insert in the UK..He now owns his product..Years
ago Prince was on Saturday Night Live and wore Slave across his
face in protest to his record company..We know how he feels.

Artists like Marillion are music lovers as well and hate what's going on
as much as you and I...But unlike many artists, they are taking their
heads out of the sand and doing something about it..More artists should
take a stance like them, and this would be the beginning of freedom for
the Artists and the masses who enjoy their music.
In Honor of Marillion I want to download a album from them...
Can you make a recommend for me.. I am not a Marillion fan
yet, but these sound like guys I can get behind..

Thanks for this enlightening post,

Nightfly

And might I add - Prince's new album is absolutely phenomenal. I've been playing it over and over and over for the past few days. It feels as if I've know each song forever. Highly recommend it.

Hi Nightfly

With their first singer (Fish):
Some progressive rock :
Script For A Jester's Tear (1983)
Misplaced Childhood (1985)

With their actual singer (Steve Hogarth, aka h)
Some progressive pop:
Brave (1994) (A little obscure, but very interesting, my fav)
Afraid Of Sunlight (1995)

Some pop/rock:
This Stange Engine (1997) (The last song is their singer's autobiography, but it has 15 min of silence, MB for nothing if you download from Sparks, better if you try on another shop)
Anoraknophobia (2001) (Hapy songs mixed with some obscure and depressive songs, but I strongly recommend This Is 21st Century)
Marbles (2004) (Another of my favs, a masterpiece)
Somewhere Else (2007) (Their last album, different, a little rough, but includes a song Faith, that I think you like it, this song)

Some very good live albums (fine compilations of their bests songs):
The Thieving Magpie (1988) (Includes the whole live version of Misplaced Childhood)
Made Again (1996) (Includes the whole live version of Brave)

Maybe I'd recommend specially for you this two live albums, This Strange Engine, Marbles and Somewhere Else (yeah, I know, five albums, three of them double CD, maybe are many, but they are a quite good Marillion summary)

Songs specially dedicated to Nightfly:
Sympathy (a Troggs' song cover)
Beautiful
Made Again
This Is The 21st Century
Thankyou Whoever You Are
Faith

Kalvin

Many of the songs are right up there with his greatest hits. Absolutely fantastic. I recommended it to two friends who are in the UK - and they both said that they got it for free from a newspaper! Now I understand why!

Hi Kalvin / Nightfly,
I have not tried much of the newer Marillion stuff (with the exception of Marbles & Holidays In Eden), but Misplaced Childhood is still my favorite album of all time. I would definitely add Clutching At Straws to the list of early(ish) Marillion ones. Also, agree with Kalvin that The Thieving Magpie is great. If like me you also like Fish, I would also highly recommend his first two solo albums (Vigil In A Wilderness Of Mirrors & Internal Exile). Both of these are excellent.
Cheers,
Dave C

I agree with Dave. For those who likes Fish , Clutching At Straws is maybe the appropiate of his Marillion years, because it's the more similar to his solo years. I specially like Internal Exile and a live album: Sushi.

The first Marillion album I got was Misplaced Childhood (more than 20 years ago). I played (and still do) a lot, and I still remember the whole lyrics. I think it's my "most played" album.

When they changed the singer, I felt disappointed, but they catched me again when they released Brave.
