Music I already Own - 03-23-2007, 09:12 AM

One thing I would like to point out is that if you already own the music in another format, vinyl, cassette, Wax cylinder then you have purchased the use rights to that music. You CAN rip music from a vinyl album or cassette and get an MP3 / WMA etc, all that AllofMP3.com does is save a whole lot of fiddling around to do this by allowing you to download the music you already have at a nominal charge.

As for new music if the price came down to a reasonable level (why are albums £10 in the UK but $10 in the USA which is effectively half price???) we would all purchase our music on CD!!

Buying music on some online sites makes an album more expensive than buying in a store if you download all the tracks. Bit pointless really.

I think it is allowed to download music that you already have payed for, but i think someone might need to confirm that

According to what I have read, you only own rights to the specific form of music you have purchased. EXAMPLE: If you have bought a CD, tape, or vinyl of AC/DC's "Back in Black" you have rights ONLY to that specific medium you have purchased. You do not have rights to download MP3's of that music from other sources. This is, however U.S. law and I do not know about other countries.

Many years ago (from 2001 to 2005) I was also using www.play.com and www.cd-wow.com (and www.cdjungle.com). Never had any trouble. Then I started using eBay and Amazon (primarily for older CD's) and then (a couple of years ago) I ran into a couple of shops that sell new albums even cheaper than the three shops at the top: www.music-wow.com and www.bangcd.com. Excellent service, I must say.

If what you say is true then everyone who purchases a CD and rips it to a computer would be breaking the law, I'm sure the RIAA would love that to be true but it isn't. I think it is what is called "fair use". In that they presume that if you are listening to an MP3 etc then you aren't also listening to the CD at the same time. Just like you are allowed to make a "back up" copy of a computer disk for archiving as long as you don't sell it on and use it for you own personal use.

If you download albums you don't own then there could be a question over copyright but that is country dependant. Just because AOMP3 is legal in Russia doesn't make it legal to download in your own country. Here in the UK the authorities have stated they will go after AOMP3 and not individual users for copyright violations. However, this has to be proved in court (don't hold your breath!)

Meanwhile I'm just downloading everything I can get my hands on

I remember reading articles about the RIAA targeting colleges and universities in the US because of the extent of the illegal downloading going on there.

I think Acordis may not be considering the "redistribution" aspects of the laws.

I think it's quite a stretch in the first post to assume that a significant number of users already own another format of tunes they're downloading.

I agree with your statement...seems to me that if most people already 'own' the music, they wouldn't need to purchase it again because it can be ripped to your computer (unless it is on cassette of cource). If I own a CD, I'm not going to pay to download it again...what's the point?

I feel that if I am purchasing the music, which I am, than it is legal. As far as I'm conserned...the music industry is just being greedy. I can't see spending up to $20.00 for a CD that I may only like about 3 maybe 4 songs on. Maybe the music industry should make their songs so that we can download the ones we want for a small price like aom3 does.

Angelizs:

No need to pay $20 for a newly released CD. Just go here: www.bangcd.com or here: www.music-wow.com. Never experienced any problems with either one.

Alternatively: www.cd-wow.com, www.play.com or www.cdjungle.com. All three quality stores but a little more expensive than the two mentioned above.

None of the five charge for shipping.

I just checked out the bangcd.com. There are no shipping charges, either. That is really cool.

I've only made MP3s from my own purchased CDs so far, but can't you find legal MP3s for most single songs now?

I'd say that the number of songs an individual likes on any given album is a subjective thing, and doesn't justify illegal downloads.
